Dosanjh investigated how temperature affects the cyclic fatigue resistance of three nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary file systems—EdgeFile® (EdgeEndo), Vortex Blue, and ESX—to better simulate clinical conditions. Files were tested at 3°C, 22°C (room temperature), 37°C (body temperature), and 60°C in a simulated curved canal, and the number of cycles to fracture (NCF) was measured. Temperature significantly influenced fatigue resistance for all systems. At every temperature tested, EdgeFile consistently demonstrated the highest cyclic fatigue resistance, outperforming both Vortex Blue and ESX. Although EdgeFile showed a reduction in fatigue resistance as temperatures increased from room temperature to body temperature, it still maintained a significantly higher NCF than the competing systems under clinically relevant conditions. The authors attributed this performance to EdgeFile’s proprietary heat-treated, martensitic alloy, which provides greater flexibility and resistance to fatigue. The study concluded that body temperature substantially affects the mechanical behavior of NiTi files, emphasizing that future fatigue testing should be performed at 37°C rather than room temperature to more accurately reflect clinical performance. Overall, the findings support EdgeFile as the most fatigue-resistant instrument evaluated across all tested temperatures, reinforcing its durability and reliability during endodontic treatment.
